I just succeeded installing gentoo on my iBook and making yaboot boot the initrd and the kernel :-)
At the login prompt I type a user name. Nothing happens for maybe five seconds and then the login prompt comes up again. This is very similar to typing a wrong password on a usual system, but notice: it doesn't even ask for the password!

I have installed gentoo and other distros several times but I have never seen this before.

I have not configured iptables. After compiling a kernel (with genkernel) I ran yabootconf and nothing else.

Thank you. Philip.

In the installation you should type:
Code:
passwd

From root user, the manual say it.

Now it's probably easy. You have to boot from live-cd, mount the root partition, charoot in it, do source /etc/profile && env-update and do:
Code:
passwd

Then enter the root password and reboot.

I have given a password for root and I have created an everyday user and given him a password. I still can't login.

Note this:
The problem is not that it doesn't accept the password. It doesn't ask for the password. When I type the user name in the prompt and press enter it just prompt for the user name again.....

Thank you for trying.

When I installed gentoo on my iBook, I had to (reboot live-cd and chroot,) add "pam" to my /etc/make.conf and emerge "shadow" in order to login.

Mine gave me a bunch of errors when I entered my username; you aren't mentioning any so you may have a different problem, but you might give this a shot.

You say I should add pam to my /etc/make.conf. Should I just add it anywhere or should it be as a value of some variable?

Thank you so much, both of you. I now have a running system! I still have some problems that need some googling and maybe asking.
