my /usr/portage directory has grown to ~10G :( and i was hoping someone could point me in the right direction of cleaning out some of the "junk" that might be in there.... i don't want to get rid of something crucial and kill my system!

try doing a du -h /usr/portage | sort -n ... then try to see what is taking so much space ... :D

looks like it is /usr/portage/distfiles that is the real hog in the bunch... it is about 7G... can those be cleaned out?

Yes. When portage needs them, it will re-fetch them.

But that will also increase the load on the mirrors. It's better to keep recent distfiles and use one of the many scripts available to prune the old.
