"netmount" depends on your NIC being UP and active, so the problem is'nt netmount it's your network interface needs configuring

after i get the error im at a promt, when i try to ping things, i get unkown host,

but if i do the manual network configuration in the handbook with ifconfig and route and set up things that way it works, is there a way i can make it do that byitself on startup, could that be part of the problem?

Dennis

You should be able to configure your NIC in /etc/conf.d/net

A problem I ran into that resulted in the same error you are having is that on one of my recent installs (using a genkernel compile instead of the manual menuconfig) I accidentally did an

Code:
rc-update add coldplug default

instaed of a

Code:
rc-update add coldplug boot

which caused the module for my NIC to not be loaded until after the network had tried to come up. Also, make sure (if you're using DHCP) that you have dhcpcd installed. Accidentally left that one out once too ;)

i think it has somthing to do with the file

/etc/conf.d/hosts

when i made that i had no idea what i was doing, it says in the handbook to include people on your network, i am behind a router and have other computers on the router so should i include them in the hosts file?

there was already some crap in this file as well like

::1 ip6-localhost ip6-loopback
fe00::0 ip6-localnet
ff00::0 ip6-mcastprefix ..... and some others, should i leave these in here? or replace them with something?

Moved from Installing Gentoo to Duplicate Threads in favour of "Netmount" can't get the network to start at all -
