I have problems with alsa.

I compiled the kernel with the above options built-in ....
then #emerge alsa-utils

but when I try alsamixer:
alsamixer: function snd_ctl_open failed for default: No such File or directory.

This is my lspci:
Code:

0000:00:0b.0 Host bridge: Apple Computer Inc. UniNorth AGP
0000:00:10.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Rage 128 PF/PRO AGP 4x TMDS
0001:10:0b.0 Host bridge: Apple Computer Inc. UniNorth PCI
0001:10:17.0 Class ff00: Apple Computer Inc. KeyLargo Mac I/O (rev 03)
0001:10:18.0 USB Controller: Apple Computer Inc. KeyLargo USB
0001:10:19.0 USB Controller: Apple Computer Inc. KeyLargo USB
0001:10:1a.0 FireWire (IEEE 1394): Texas Instruments TSB12LV26 IEEE-1394 Controller (Link)
0002:20:0b.0 Host bridge: Apple Computer Inc. UniNorth Internal PCI
0002:20:0f.0 Ethernet controller: Apple Computer Inc. UniNorth GMAC (Sun GEM) (rev 01)

(I cannot see any sound card...)

This is my computer: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=43104

Hi,

Make sure you have the following kernel options for ALSA enabled:

Device Drivers - Sound --->
<*> Sound card support
Advanced Linux Sound Architecture --->
< > PowerMac DMA sound support
<*> Advanced Linux Sound Architecture
<*> Sequencer support
<*> Sequencer dummy client
<*> OSS Mixer API
<*> OSS PCM (digital audio) API
[*] OSS Sequencer API
ALSA PowerMac devices --->
<*> PowerMac (AWACS, DACA, Burgundy, Tumbler, Keywest)

After that load the modules snd-powermac and snd-pcm-oss.

For more info have a look at http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/gentoo-ppc-faq.xml and http://geekounet.org/powerbook/ibookg4.html.

Cheers.

If you built in the kernel, modprobe should not work.
Because you built in the kernel, there should not be no modules. :)
A long times ago, I experienced when the modules had been built in.
I recommend that you make them modules. (not Y but M)
And then run alsaconf.

Cheers

Ok I try it!

EDIT:
Alsamixer doesn't work : same error!!

But modules are loaded:

snd_usb_audio
snd_pcm
snd_timer
snd_page_alloc
snd_usb_lib
snd_rawmidi
snd_seq_device
snd

Alsaconf finds:
powermac PowerMac
legacy Probe legacy ISA (non-PnP) chips

But if I select PowerMac:

Configuring snd-***
Configuring [lib/liblow.c(329)]

but then it says it cannot find the device (snd-powermac)

well... it's strange.
i can't look at snd_powermac module loaded in your posting.
check if you make powermac module.
after modprobes snd_powermac, try it again.
by the way, do you use usb audio device instead of built-in sound card?
i assumed that you use built-in sound card.

The problem is that i can' understand what is the sound card, if it's a built-in or an usb device!!

If i try modprobe snd-powermac it says No such device!

Do you have oss enabled in the kernel? You might be trying to run two mutually exclusive sound architectures.

(wild guess)

Do you have oss enabled in the kernel? You might be trying to run two mutually exclusive sound architectures.

(wild guess)

I heard of people who only run OSS because ALSA doesn't work...
but.... I can try if OSS works (maybe it doesn't)

EDIT: I think the sound chip is AOAKeylargo

To fix the alsaconf errors you need to have gpm started.

https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-289727-highlight-liblow.html

What type of mac is this?

It's a PowerMac G4 Cube: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=43104

EDIT: Now alsaconf doesn't say configuration of snd-***.
But Alsa still doesn't work

some updates!!

In gaim the sound works!! But only in Gaim. (sound method= automatic).

Then if I load snd-usb-audio and edit /etc/modules.d/alsa adding alias snd-card-0 snd-usb-audio:

Code:

cube mamma # nano /etc/modules.d/alsa
cube mamma # modules-update
cube mamma # /etc/init.d/alsasound start

OK!!!! I LOAD EVERY SOUND MODULES, then I launched /etc/init.d/alsasound start, and the sound works!!!!

But the last question: which of this modules I do not need to load??

Code:

Module                  Size  Used by
snd_pcm_oss            67936  0
snd_mixer_oss          21056  1 snd_pcm_oss
snd_seq_oss            39668  0
snd_seq_midi            8608  0
snd_seq_midi_event      7296  2 snd_seq_oss,snd_seq_midi
snd_seq_dummy           2916  0
snd_seq                66168  6 snd_seq_oss,snd_seq_midi,snd_seq_midi_event,snd_seq_dummy
audio                  46048  0
snd_usb_audio          78400  0
snd_usb_lib            16704  1 snd_usb_audio
snd_rawmidi            26016  2 snd_seq_midi,snd_usb_lib
snd_seq_device          8620  5 snd_seq_oss,snd_seq_midi,snd_seq_dummy,snd_seq,snd_rawmidi
snd_pcm               104196  2 snd_pcm_oss,snd_usb_audio
snd_timer              24868  2 snd_seq,snd_pcm
snd                    62132  9 snd_pcm_oss,snd_mixer_oss,snd_seq_oss,snd_seq,snd_usb_audio,snd_rawmidi,snd_seq_device,snd_pcm,snd_timer
snd_page_alloc          8868  1 snd_pcm

and... how can I load them at boot?? (can I tell ALSA which modules load so I can only launch /etc/init.d/alsasound start or I have to add them in xxx (i don't remember the file now))??

Ok SOLVED. So who have a G4 Cube:

This is the kernel modules:
Code:

Device Drivers
    - sound
          <*> Sound Card Support
          < > PowerMac DMA support
          Advanced Linux Sound Architecture
                <M> Advanced Linux Sound Architecture
                <M> Sequencer support
                <M>      Sequencer dummy client
                <M> OSS Mixer API
                <M> OSS PCM API
                 [ * ]  OSS sequencer API
                .....
                .....
                ALSA PowerMac Devices
                   < > Powermac (AWACS, DACA...)
                USB Devices
                    <M> USB Audio/MIDI driver

Then:
in my /etc/modules.d/alsa I have :
Code:

# Alsa 0.9.X kernel modules' configuration file.
# $Header: /var/cvsroot/gentoo-x86/media-sound/alsa-utils/files/alsa-modules.conf-rc,v 1.4 2004/11/16 01:31:22 eradicator Exp $

# ALSA portion
# OSS/Free portion

##
## IMPORTANT:
## You need to customise this section for your specific sound card(s)
## and then run `update-modules' command.
## Read alsa-driver's INSTALL file in /usr/share/doc for more info.
##
##  ALSA portion
## alias snd-card-0 snd-interwave
## alias snd-card-1 snd-ens1371
##  OSS/Free portion
## alias sound-slot-0 snd-card-0
## alias sound-slot-1 snd-card-1
##

# OSS/Free portion - card #1
##  OSS/Free portion - card #2
## alias sound-service-1-0 snd-mixer-oss
## alias sound-service-1-3 snd-pcm-oss
## alias sound-service-1-12 snd-pcm-oss
#alias /dev/mixer snd-mixer-oss
#alias /dev/dsp snd-pcm-oss
#alias /dev/midi snd-seq-oss

# --- BEGIN: Generated by ALSACONF, do not edit. ---
# --- ALSACONF version 1.0.9a ---
alias snd-card-0 snd-usb-audio
# --- END: Generated by ALSACONF, do not edit. ---

Then # modules-update
And if /etc/init.d/alsasound start
give no errors you can add it at boot

# rc-update add alsasound default

This is my lsmod (only sounds):
Code:

mamma@cube ~ $ lsmod
Module                  Size  Used by
snd_pcm_oss            67936  0
snd_mixer_oss          21056  1 snd_pcm_oss
snd_seq_dummy           2916  0
snd_seq_oss            39668  0
snd_seq_midi_event      7296  1 snd_seq_oss
snd_seq                66168  5 snd_seq_dummy,snd_seq_oss,snd_seq_midi_event
snd_usb_audio          78400  1
snd_pcm               104196  2 snd_pcm_oss,snd_usb_audio
snd_timer              24868  2 snd_seq,snd_pcm
snd_page_alloc          8868  1 snd_pcm
snd_usb_lib            16704  1 snd_usb_audio
snd_rawmidi            26016  1 snd_usb_lib
snd_seq_device          8620  4 snd_seq_dummy,snd_seq_oss,snd_seq,snd_rawmidi
snd                    62132  11 snd_pcm_oss,snd_mixer_oss,snd_seq_oss,snd_seq,snd_usb_audio,snd_pcm,snd_timer,snd_rawmidi,snd_seq_device

Hope that it can be useful to everybody who have this computer

Thanks to everybody who helps me!!!
