I poked around this forum a bit but couldn't find the answer to my question. I'm thinking of getting an Athlon 64 chip and nforce4 motherboard (ABIT KN8) but don't want to spend time dealing with 64 bit compatibility issues (and I use some non-64 bit commercial programs).

Is there a guide available for installing a pure 32 bit system on a 64 bit chip (Athlon 64)? In particluar, what sort of compiler flags/make.conf options are available. (For example: I read somwhere that you couldn't use -k8 since gcc will assume you are compiling 64 bit).

Thanks!

Is there a way to do this without setting up a chroot enviroment (which requires basically doing two installs)? I really want just a 32 bit system - not a 32 bir system inside a 64 bit system.

Thanks
Boris

use a 32-bit install cd and download x86 stages follow the good ol gentoo handbook and i think you can use the -march=k8 flag in your cflags as well

I installed Gentoo_x86 on my AMD 64 rig using the -march=athlon-xp
It was my 1st successful attempt to install Gentoo.
Then encouraged by my success I installed the AMD64 version, but I realized that I should have stuck to the x86 version.

On x86 just put --march=athlon-xp --msse2 in your CFLAGS.
