recently I figured out that I can just use a split IDE cable (with the three plugs) to replace the one that comes attached to the cdrom tray in the Apple G5 so I can have three hdd's installed (two sata one IDE). I put the extra hard drive right above the graphics card held in place by a dummy pci card. I was doing a stage 1 install of gentoo (on the Ultra ATA drive, not the SATA) and in emerging the system the computer just rebooted. I tried again and in no particular place INIT sent the kill signal and it rebooted, not shut down. I tried taking the hard drive physically out of the box and let the box cool down to make sure I wasn't blocking any airways. I rebooted with the hard drive plugged in but out of the box with all the heat things in place and I tried to emerge lynx and got the kill signal right about the time it started compiling.
This problem always happened in a chrooted environment while compiling something. I have used liveCD's from 2005.1 to 2003 and they all do the same thing. This was really tricky, anybody got any ideas? OSX runs just fine with no complaints even when compiling similar things in there.

note: this is a powermac G5 single 1.8 GHZ tower. it was one of the first ones bought when they first came out. I have installed gentoo before with the 2003, 2004 livecd's (most all of them) and never had any such problems, which is why I quickly went back to them, but it seems that it is not a livecd problem. is there a module in the G5 thermal package that shuts down the compie if it see's anything going wrong?
