I got an old, free iMac from a friend and I'm wondering if I can get Gentoo Linux on it. Here is all that I can tell about it:

1) iMac, made in 1999
2) 350 MHz, 64 Meg RAM
3) Family number M5521
4) OS 9 installed

I've been browsing around the 'Get Gentoo' area and I don't see a particular image for a plain ol' iMac, just a lot of mention about G4s and G5s. Could any one help me pick the right boot image to get me started?

I've installed Gentoo many times on PCs, just not on a Mac. Also, I won't be needing X, so don't worry about the slow CPU.

Just get the PPC (32-bit) version of the Universal or Minimal installation cd.

Well, I downloaded and made the CD. I boot from it holding down the C key after I hear the chimes. When I press enter at the boot prompt I get a 'Default Catch! code=700" message.

And then I notice I'm in the Open Firmware. So I then type:
Code:
boot cd:,\\yaboot
at that prompt (As per the FAQ for PPC). Then I get a message:
Quote:
Loading Elf
Then:
Quote:
CLAIM Failed
And then I'm back at the Open Firmware prompt. Anyone know what I should do next?

How did you burn the CD?

I actually downloaded it via my Windows XP machine, then burned the *.iso image to a blank CD-R using Roxio Easy CD Creator 5. Roxio didn't report any errors. I admit I didn't do a md5sum to check it. Do you think that's it?

Probably not. Does it boot OS9/OSX? (Does it already have an OS?) Have you checked the RAM yet?

Yep, it boots up OS9 fine. And I can use OS9 without error, suffing the web and such. So it seems the RAM is fine. I'll make another boot disk and see if it works.

Okay, okay, I'm a moron! I figued why I can't boot from this CD - I downloaded and used ppc64 instead of ppc (32 bit). I have now downloaded the right one and it's booting fine. Thanks for your help anyway, folks.
