Hi,

I am trying to sync my palm tungsten with my iBook running kernel linux-2.6.12-gentoo-r9. The problem is that I don't know which device should be linked to /dev/pilot and I didn't find any documentation about that... I intend to use jpilot. Any help is very much appreciated.

My dmesg output is as follows with the palm plugged:

Total memory = 256MB; using 512kB for hash table (at c0480000)

try /dev/tts/USB0 or /dev/tts/USB1 instead of /dev/pilot

I don't have /dev/tts device just /dev/tty***. Do you know how to enable it? I think it is maybe a kernel option...

Cheers.

/dev/tts/USB0 or USB1 only exists when the Palm is in the cradle AND you have pressed the hotsync button. My Tungsten T2 works perfectly with linux and jpilot, better than on OS X because the OS X Palm Desktop is looking more and more abandoned. Not that everything worked in the first place.

You may have to fiddle with your udev rules.

btw, kpilot in KDE 3.4.2 is getting better. It looks much nicer than jpilot, but still has some sync bugs.

Thank you! The devices /dev/tts/USB0 and USB1 are ok and the dmesg output show the device connected:

But when I try to sync (either for /dev/tts/USB0 or /dev/tts/USB1), I get the error:

pi_bind: No such file or directory

Check your serial port and settings
Exiting with status SYNC_ERROR_BIND
Finished

How do I fix it?

Cheers.

Glad to see that was it. I remember tearing my own hair out (as opposed to someone else's! :)) over this a few years ago.

Did you press the hotsync button on the cradle FIRST then click jpilot's sync button? If you're used to Palm Desktop this might seem a bit strange.

After pressing hotsync on the cradle, try running pilot-xfer from the command line to find out what's going on:
Code:

pilot-xfer -p /dev/tts/USB0 --list

This will just list the files on the Palm.

When you post config files or dmesg, please just paste the revelant parts, not the whole thing. It makes it kind of hard to read.
