I've come up with:
Code:
emerge --sync; emerge -uDNf world >&/dev/null & emerge -uDNav world

Note the lone ampersand. This will quietly background the fetching of files, significantly streamlining the process!

For convenience you should probably alias it in your ~/.bashrc like so:
Code:
alias world='emerge --sync; emerge -uDNf world >&/dev/null & emerge -uDNav world'

alternatively, a scriptlet:
Code:
echo 'emerge --sync; emerge -uDNf world >&/dev/null & emerge -uDNav world' >> /usr/local/bin/world
chmod 755 !$

maybe you should change "emerge --sync" to "emerge --sync --quiet" this may speed the sync a bit.

I always watch the syncs. It's nice to have some vague idea of the changes going on in the portage tree :)

I like to tack an "rm -rf /var/tmp/portage/* /usr/portage/distfiles/*" on at the end.

Are you pressed on space in / ? Do you have lots of free space in /home ? If so, try this

Thanks, but I've already done that. I just like to keep things neat and tidy.

There is nothing neat and tidy about carelessly rming those files. In fact it is downright sloppy.

if you always clean /var/tmp/portage, you won't ever be able to emerge --resume (--skipfirst)

WRT /usr/portage/distfiles, there is no sense re-downloading a bunch of files when a new revision just gets a patch update.

If you really want to keep things tidy, put tmpreaper in a cron job.
