Hey all,

I have 1GB of ram in my computer, which shows up in windows XP as... 1gb of ram or 1024mb.

In fvwm and conky, conky shows my RAM size to be 883MB. Why is linux only using 883 of my ram?

How can i check this elsewhere?

Thanks!
George

Check it from the console with:
Code:
free -m

You need to recompile your kernel with CONFIG_HIGHMEM=y set in your .config

quick answer, you need to enable high memory support. in your kernel config under "Processor type and features" there will be a line like "High Memory Support (off) --->". this needs to be set to 4GB. obviously a recompile will be in order. then you'll be set.
now for the caveat:
Quote:
It is advised to not enable CONFIG_HIGHMEM in the kernel to utilize the extra 128 MB you get for your 1 GB RAM system. I/O Devices cannot directly address high memory from PCI space, so bounce buffers have to be used. Plus the virtual memory management and paging costs come with extra mappings.

this may not be an issue in 2.6 kernels, i'm not current enough. see http://kerneltrap.org/node/2450 for a nice article and discussion on the subject. i know there was a patch out there that addresses the 1GB dilemma, but its been a while.

Moved from Kernel & Hardware to Duplicate Threads in favour of 1GB of memory but only 885 being seen?
