I was wondering if it was possible to change the brightness level on the 12" powerbook with the nvidia card. and if someone knew a command that would turn off the lcd screen to save some battery.

Try nvidia-settings (must emerge it first) not sure about turning off the monitor after a period of time.

EDIT: sorry, nvidia-settings is not support under PPC :oops:

It is false. I have a Pb 12" with a nvidia and the brightness level works with pbbuttonsd.

/etc/pbbuttonsd.conf has a section that does infact affect brightness..

Code:

#LCD_Brightness        = 8      ; initial LCD brightness level
LCD_FadingSpeed       = 5       ; 0 = no smooth fading
LCD_AutoAdjust        = yes     ; only on Aluminum PowerBooks
LCD_IllumUpKey        = 225
LCD_IllumDownKey      = 224

unfortunately my keys aren't working right now.. but it does fade to off when I close my lid and the initial brightness setting does change something..
So I would say it works with the nvidia chipset, but I don't have it set up very well. :wink:

It works from the live cd, so I copied the entire pbbuttonsd.conf from the live cd to my etc and when I booted up it did not work. The sound and eject key work but not the brightness. I am wondering if there is a setting in the kerenel that I have to set to make brightness work??

here is my pbbuttonsd.conf

I have a 12" pb and I posted my xorg.conf here:

https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-378072.html

I haven't done anything with my pbbuttonsd.conf, so I doubt that it would help.

There is a strange thing in your configuration : you compile rivafb as a module. So what framebuffer you use at the boot ? you use a initrd ?
Because me, I had to compile rivafb in the vmlinux for my pb boot correctly.

For the touchpad with synaptics, I had to add the followed lines in /etc/udev/rules.d/50-udev.rules :

# Add a symlink for the touchpad
KERNEL="event[0-9]*", BUS="usb", SYSFS{interface}="Touchpad", SYMLINK="input/atp"

and in my xorg.conf, I use :
Section "InputDevice"
Identifier "Synaptics Touchpad"
Driver "synaptics"
Option "SendCoreEvents" "true"
Option "Device" "/dev/input/atp"
...

thank you thank you thank you. It is working

now if synaptic is working I would be happier :D
it does not seem to recognize the mouse

the error is
Code:

Touchpad no synaptics event device found (checked 18 nodes)
(EE) Xf86Serial: Cannot open devicec /dev/input/atp
    No Such file or directory
[...]
(EE) Touchpad no synaptics touchpad detected and no repeater device
(EE) Touchpad unable to query/initialize Synaptics hardware.

and that is true if I go to /dev/input there is no atp. If I change the line
/dev/input/atp to /dev/input/mice I get pretty much the same error without the Xf890Serial
Code:

 Section "InputDevice"
                Identifier      "Synaptics Touchpad"
                Driver          "synaptics"
                Option          "SendCoreEvents"        "true"
                Option          "Device"                "/dev/input/atp"
                Option          "Protocol"              "auto-dev"
                Option          "LeftEdge"              "0"
                Option          "RightEdge"             "850"
