HOW TO GET KDE UP AND RUNNING WITH GENTOO 2005.1

The Gentoo 2005.1 installation guide on the CD, and the Gentoo Manual:

http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/2005.1/handbook-x86.xml?full=1

Both say to get KDE running you should enter the command

emerge --usepkg kde

THIS IS WRONG.

If you do this, emerge will download the source packages:

pcre-5.0.tar.bz2 -- 456 KB
libidn-0.5.15.tar.gz -- 1,930 KB
kdebase-3.4.1.tar.bz2 -- 21,936 KB

After, this it will attempt to compile them, but dies (at least for i686).

WHAT YOU SHOULD DO IS ENTER THE COMMANDS:

mount /cd
export PKGDIR=/cd
emerge --usepkg kde-meta

The mount point does not matter. I believe /mnt/gentoo is often used instead of /cd

I am thinking of writing a script to help new Gentoo users like myself to navigate through the install process.

Hopefully I will get to it over the weekend.

I will publish the beginnings of it at http://www.chapelhill.indymedia.org/news/2005/09/16189.php and on https://forums.gentoo.org

Should be just a matter of reentering the commands one gave to get through the install. It will be rough but should work.

Probably will need 3 separate scripts: One up till the change root. One from there to the reboot. And one to get the desktops up and running.

Will you please stop creating new threads about this subject? This advice is given by Sven Vermuelen in the thread you were originally pointed to.

Moved from Installing Gentoo to Duplicate Threads.
