Hello all,

I was just wondering, since I am gonna upgrade to AMD Athlon 64 soon, will I be able to install the Gentoo x86 version on an AMD Athlon 64 processor and use the "-march= k8" option and the sse2 flag etc... to get my system fully optimized? Or is k8 only meant for the gentoo 64bits version because I was reading the Gentoo handbook and it said AMD Athlon 64 users should use -march=k8, so I am a bit confused

You use the k8 option for the 64bit installation, and the examples athlon-xp (with -msse2) when doing a 32bit installation.

If you want it 'fully optimised' then why not go 64 bit?

If you do go 32 bit though, I'd just go -march=athlon-xp and -msse2.

-march=k8/athlon64 *should* probably be ok, but it's effectively the same to use '-march=athlon-xp and -msse2' other than the implied -m64, so I'd stick with what we know is safe.

You could always dual boot 64 and 32 bit systems, I did for a while but recently trashed the 32 bit as I hadn't been using it much.

Okay, but is the 64Bit version just as stable as the 32Bit version?

As a newbie I can confirm that both basic Gentoo x86 and AMD 64 versions installed fine.
I tried the x86 version first , then the AMD64 one. However, I think about "downgrading" back to the x86 version because of some programs ( mostly games ) requiring some 32 bits compatibility libs. and I couldn't get them to work.
I didn't have any problem at all with the AMD64 version when installing big well known applications: KDE, Alsa, Kdevelop, xfce4 etc. the install process of the Nforce4 and Nvidia drivers went nicely too.
