Hello,

I want to connect the harddisc of my iBook to the IDE-bus of my x86 box for fast data transfer. PPC and x86 systems use different partitioning schemes, so I wonder if it is somehow possible on the x86 box to read data from the PPC harddisc without repartitioning.

You won't be able to boot from it, but you should be able to read the HD as long as you build the right partition table support into the kernel.

ok thank you.

One more question: Is there a way to create a PPC partition table on a x86 box (for putting the harddisc into a PPC system later)?

just build support for apple's partition map in your kernel and use mac-fdisk to make your partitions
mac-fdisk is 'masked by missing keyword' on x86, but it builds and workes fine for me on my athlon XP
(used it for my USB/Firewire-disk)

many thanks again. Concerning mac-fdisk on x86 I found this enhancement bug report. It is reported that the program parted can be used to create apple partition maps, too.
