Make sure that you've compiled in the correct codepage options for your filesystem, if they're not english, they're not added by default. Does dmesg have any errors after attempting to mount?

As for the keyboard, pbbuttonsd would probably work too.

You didn't answer my question:
Does dmesg have any errors after attempting to mount?

Also, do you have PC partition support compiled into your kernel?

Can you try mounting /dev/sda instead of /dev/sda1?

I'm having the same problem as him. I'm able to mount my usbpen using a live distro, but I haven't
yet figured out whats wrong with my kernel. I'm on an Athlon XP, have support for dos FS, and still
the same error. At least on my usbpen, you're supposed to mount /dev/sda, and not sda1.

The same!!

But I noticed this error in dmesg after I tryed to mount the pen:

Code:

SCSI device sda: 512000 512-byte hdwr sectors (262 MB)
sda: Write Protect is off
sda: Mode Sense: 03 00 00 00
sda: assuming drive cache: write through
 sda: sda1
FAT: invalid media value (0xb9)
VFS: Can't find a valid FAT filesystem on dev sda.

Solved. I installed something that I don't remember now.
Tomorrow I will edit this message.....

And the last question: how can I activate automount (I think my mother is not able to use the console... or she won't!!)

EDIT: I did add the support for
--- File Systems
---- Native Language support
<*> NLS ISO 8859-1 (Latin1, Western European Languages)

Have a look here:

https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-277721-highlight-howto+automount.html

I think that the bigger desktop environments also have some userspace support for auto-mounting (like KDE or GNOME). I am using the ROX-filemanager and it mounts the drive as I click on the directory of the mount-point.
