CONFIG_SOUND=y
CONFIG_DMASOUND_PMAC=y
CONFIG_DMASOUND=y

there's no such module bacause you have hardcompiled it (y) instead of creating module (m)
you can chceck what modules do you have by running modprobe -l as root.

axactly, you have sound drivers hardcompiled, have you emerged whole alsa stuff (alsa-utils)? use xmms's alsa output plugin instead of oss (after reading your .config i suppose you're using Advanced Linux Sound Architecture instead of Open Sound System)

what gives modprobe -l? if you're sure about module name try to find /lib/modules/`uname -r`/ -name *[modulename].ko - have you compiled kernel 'manually'? have you completed all steps successfully (especially make modules_install)? and (probably stupid question) are you running your new kernel or the old one (by mistake) - to be sure after each (re)compilation append some compilation ID to the kernel version.

is any alsa-related module loaded (mixer, pcm)? what does lsmod say? are you sure that you have compiled drivers apropiate to your hardware? if not it might be wise to compile (as a module) every driver suspected to be the correct one and then just try.

maybe some device files are missing. check your udev configuration and presence of /dev/sound/* files. You can alternatively check what device file (assuming that this is the problem) could not be found (use: strace alsamixer 2>&1 | grep ENOENT)

//edit: location /dev/sound/* (oss) is obsolete - alsa files should be inside /dev/snd/* (sorry about it)

Here you can find some informations about udev. Try restarting ALSA: /etc/init.d/alsasound restart. If the apropiate modules are not loaded upon system boot, add them manually to the /etc/modules.autoload.d/kernel-2.6

ok, I'm going AFK (I have to sleep sometimes)...

in the meantime you can try alsaconf. as an act of desperation you may create missing /dev/snd node using mknod:
Code:
mknod -m 600 /dev/snd/controlC0 c 116 0
chown root:audio /dev/snd/controlC0
chmod 660  /dev/snd/controlC0

good luck :!:

alsactl expects to find device nodes inside /dev/snd, at least /dev/snd/controlC0 - create this file with mknod.

Just a quick note here: as explained in the FAQ, you can use *either* OSS or ALSA. DMASOUND_PMAC is the OSS driver. If you have this module loaded, you cannot use ALSA.
