I'm installing gentoo on my desktop from stage 1 and I've gotten halfway throught emerge -e system and i'm getting the following error:
Code:

>>> Source unpacked.
['setup.py', 'build']
running build
running build_ext
building 'fchksum' extension
creating build
creating build/temp.linux-i686-2.3
i386-pc-linux-gnu-gcc -pthread -fno-strict-aliasing -DNDEBUG -O2 -mcpu=i686 -mar
ch=athlon-xp -pipe -fPIC -I/usr/include/python2.3 -c md5.c -o build/temp.linux-i
686-2.3/md5.o
unable to execute i386-pc-linux-gnu-gcc: No such file or directory
error: command 'i386-pc-linux-gnu-gcc' failed with exit status 1

I searched my system and all I have is i686 files, no i386 ones at all. my make.conf looks like:
Code:

CFLAGS="-march=athlon-xp -O2 -mcpu=i686 -pipe"
CHOST="i686-pc-linux-gnu"
CXXFLAGS="${CFLAGS}"
MAKEOPTS="-j2"

I used the same make.conf in my file server i installed last week and I think i did everything else the same with no problems what so ever...

any thoughts as to why the i386 files are missing? and how to go about fixing this?
thanks!

NOTE: this is python that it errors on, file 38 of 91. the first 37 compile without any problems

Hi.
You have something that point to the old compiler.
This have been on the forums. So read this.

It should fix your problem. If not, come back.

I had that same problem. I just skipped that one package and used the existing stage 2 version of it.

Also, you don't want to use both mcpu and march. Use one or the other. march is faster, but breaks compatibility with older systems.
