No it's stated that you may be banned if you do it more than once a day. Avoid doin' this more than once a day as far as you can... :)

Well, if you sync every 10 minutes, you will be kicked in your ass I guess :)

Why would you? What good is it for other than putting more stress on the gentoo servers?

The only times that I have re-synced more then once (well only twice) in a day was when there was some screwy messages when I started emerging something, I wating a couple of hours re-syncs and all was fine - bad manifest or summat

dont do it though regually
1) fooks up the bandwidth for the rest
2) whats the point

Yes you should avoid it, and the only reasons you could sync twice a day are :
- portage got somehow broken (like stated by Naib)
- the sync could not complete for any reason (Network failure, computer crash, the cat did CTRL-C ..)

3: You looked on packages.gentoo.org and saw that the package you waited for for months was added just after your earlier emerge sync today.

Some people suffer from Emerge Sync Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, aka ESOCD.

ESOCD sufferers believe that if their ebuilds are more than 12 hours old their computer is either running to slow or is riddled with security holes.

The disease is similar to Gentoo Riceosis.

Don't sync more than once a day without very good reason. It's just stupid. Even once a day could be said to be excessive.

Syncing for a security update on a high traffic site seems like a good excuse

Yes, but I'd say that's a fairly rare circumstance for most gentoo users, especially the kind who'd ask about how often they should be sync'ing.

I sync every time I "emerge -uDNav world", which sometimes is more than once a day, and sometimes more like once a week. It varies, and I don't see any problem with it.

If the gentoo infrastructure team is concerned about high loads on the sync servers they should develop a more efficient apt-get-like system that only downloads indexes of the ebuild information (ala eix) and fetches actual ebuild and patch files on demand (instead of the staggering 400MB portage tree).

This is very irritating, but rather than another full emerge sync what you can do is grab the individual ebuild from www.gentoo-portage.com, dump it in the right directory, "ebuild foo digest", and emerge away.

Works a treat, and it's kinder to the gentoo servers.

any automation for this like
Code:
emerge --sync lib-foo/bar
would be quite nice...
edit: could be scripted via a temporary RSYNC_EXCLUDE file.

Well might not work, as it would fail on the deps. in fact you need to dwld the ebuild, check the deps and dwld the deps ebuild, check the deps .. etc .. until deps are satisfied.
So, what if you need to rsync ten times ? you get banned :D
