Quick question for those using ibook G4's. Are any of you experiencing problems with your USB ports? The reason I ask is because when in OSX I will plug in the ipod shuffle, and all of a sudden without moving a thing it will tell me that I removed the drive without unmounting it. Of course it's still in there, and the light is still flashing. What gives? This seems to happen quite often, but not consistently.

I was in the ibook support forums, and someone is trying to tell me that removing a usb drive without unmounting it first will fry the USB port on the computer. Well, I'm no hardware expert by any means, but if this isn't the craziest thing I've heard about hardware, then I'm not sure what is. Am I just ignorant here? (Please no flames to this blatant invitation to insult me )

Somehow, I just don't have much faith in the Mac community forums that much. So I decided to query my gentoo buddies on this topic.

*EDIT*
I also experience this problem with other generic flash USB drives, as well as with my USB hub to my keyboard and mouse (only once in this case).

It sounds like a hardware problem, perhaps a broken USB socket? I would take the iBook to your nearest Apple store and show them what's happening.

My two main concerns with going to the local Apple store are:

1. It's not always reproducible.

2. When will I be able to still work without my laptop

1 is a real concern for me, and 2 is just me being a baby about the inconvenience. Have you ever heard of this killing the USB port by not unmounting the drive, though? That sounded like an odd explaination to me from the Apple forums.

No, but I have had a bad iPod FW cable take out the FW ports on my PowerBook. Stranger things have happened. It still sounds like a hardware issue to me, especially if it happens in OSX.
