if you are getting sound but with low volume then try this

start alsamixer
increase DRC Rage to about 70 and make sure that some important stuff such as master, pc speaker, and DRC is not muted.

I was having the same problem and the drc rage fixed it

ok, but...the main problem is: why ALSA doesn't work? i own a pb 12'' (i bought some days ago so i think that is the last model) and i tried alsa modules for mac. When i start all works fine...but... i don't hear nothing.... if i listen whith more attention (and with all mixer level at maximum) i hear a distorted (and low) sound! No errors/warning on my dmesg!! Some suggestion?

@totila: Launch alsamixer (or another tool to control ALSA volume levels) and mute DRC. Post if this works.

Much better, now the volume is higher! thank you Christopher...but the sound is still distorted....seem a blank noise (like a radio interferences) sovrapposed to the original sound! do you have same suggestion? thank you!

I have a similar problem, I have a powerbook 12", I followed the solutions proposed in this thread, but the modules don't load...
Code:
powerbook ~ # modprobe snd-powermac
FATAL: Error inserting snd_powermac (/lib/modules/2.6.12-gentoo-r10/kernel/sound/ppc/snd-powermac.ko): No such device
powerbook ~ # modprobe dmasound-pmac
FATAL: Error inserting dmasound_pmac (/lib/modules/2.6.12-gentoo-r10/kernel/sound/oss/dmasound/dmasound_pmac.ko): No such device

I don't know what to do...

@dracula1982 and totila: Seems that guys from Italy like 12" powerbooks... we in Germany like 15" powerbooks... ;-)

Hmm... I also have some interferences when I use my pcmcia wifi card. Do you have a wlan card plugged-in? What programs produce this sound? XMMS, mplayer?

@dracula1985: Please post the last lines of the kernel messages when you try to load the sound modules. What does

Code:
/etc/init.d/alsasound start

say? The output of

Code:
lspci -v

would also be helpful to compare it with my powerbook (sound works great here).

In Germany you produce BMW but the best are Alfa Romeo... :P

When I try to start alsasound it try to load the soundcard module, and modprobe fails with the errors posted yesterday.

Not only BMW, but also Porsche... ;-)

Please make sure that dmasound-pmac is not loaded when you modprobe snd-powermac. So remove all sound modules and then modprobe snd-powermac (not dmasound-pmac!!).

Edit: Also make sure, that the module dmasound-core is not loaded!

On my machine: If I try to load the snd-powermac module after loading the dmasound-pmac module I get the same error as you have:

Code:
/usr/src/linux# modprobe snd-powermac
FATAL: Error inserting snd_powermac (/lib/modules/2.6.14-rc1/kernel/sound/ppc/snd-powermac.ko): No such device

You have Porche, but we have Ferrari...
You have Mercedes, but we have Lancia...
We are better in cars! :P
But your govern has passed from windows to suse linux, therefor you are better in state administration... ;-)

Ok, I unloaded dmasound-pmac and dmasound-core and everything works fine.

Thank you!

Edit: Everything loads without error, but there isn't any sound...
I followed the thread proposal, I muted DRC but nothing changed...

Have you unmuted all channels? Please post the output of

Code:
amixer

What is your test program for sound? XMMS? MPlayer?

Ok, I don't understand why, but MPlayer works great, but KDE sounds are distorted noises...
But both use arts...

Don't know much about ARTS (I don't use KDE), but are you sure that mplayer uses ARTS? Have you check the audio output settings? Are the explicitly set to ARTS and not to ALSA?

I told MPlayer to use arts and I told arts to use alsa.
MPlayer using arts works fine...

I am running out of ideas I must admit... What types of files do you play with mplayer? MP3s or movies? Aren't the KDE sounds wave files?

You are a genius!
KDE plays OGG files, and all OGG start fine (less than 1 second) and then becomes a distorted noise.
In KDE sounds sets there are some wav files, i put theme in the active set and everything sound fine...
In fact, only OGG files becomes distorted noises...
But why?

When I got my PB last year I had some problems playing MP3 files with XMMS and ALSA output plugin: I set the buffer time of the ALSA plugin to the highest level (I guess it was 5000ms) and it worked fine. As is said I have no experiences with ARTS and KDE, but maybe looking for something similiar (I mean buffer time) and tweak it a bit helps to solve your problem.

I assume that you compiled ARTS with the "vorbis" USE-flag!?

i have a similar problem....but... i start to think that is an hardware issue....
i read this (@ http://developer.apple.com/documentation/Hardware/Developer_Notes/Macintosh_CPUs-G4/12inchPowerBookG4/3_Input-Output/chapter_4_section_16.html#//apple_ref/doc/uid/TP40001763-CH207-BCIIIHFG)

Quote:
The sound circuitry handles audio data as 44.1 kHz 16-bit samples. If audio data sampled at a lower rate on another computer is played as output, the Sound Manager transparently upsamples the data to 44.1 kHz prior to sending the audio data to the sound circuitry.

Maybe Alsa doesn't make this upsampling and so... if you send some 44khz/16bit files all works fine....when i sent my "redalert.wav" with aplay (so..no arts issue are possible) campionated at 22khz, the sound card circuits make no conversion, and, i think, all the missing samples (about 50%) are assumed as samples with value = 0, in this way the wave is really distorced because i think that apens something like this

Code:

A
|    /\/\
|/\/     \/\
|             \/
|
+----------------------->
  ABABABAB

A -> True sample
B -> Missing sample

(obviusly the missing samles doesn't assume the 0 value because there are somewhere a pass-low filter)
maybe i make some mistakes (i am not a telecomunication engegneer :-) ) but i think that this must be the issue.

So if you play KDE sounds (that aren't at high quality, so a 20khz sampling is enough) doesn't work. If you play a Film with 44.1Khz audio all works fine. Probably this should be segnalated to ALSA developers (do some of you want to post this bug, i have a lot of trubles in this period)

Bye
