I have not done any system updates for about a year.
Today
emerge sync gives a message:
* An update to portage is available. It is _highly_ recommended
* that you update portage now, before any other packages are updated.
* Please do so and then update ALL of your configuration files.

any subsequient emerge command like "emerge portage" gives
!!! ARCH is not set... Are you missing the /etc/make.profile symlink?
!!! Is the symlink correct? Is your portage tree complete?

Yes, I do not see "/etc/make.profile"
this is the link to make.profile -> ../usr/portage/profiles/default-x86-1.4
and what I have in /usr/portage/profiles is

arch.list default-darwin info_pkgs profiles.desc use.desc
base default-linux info_vars selinux use.local.desc
categories default-macos lang.desc thirdpartymirrors vserver
commercial embedded obsolete uclibc
default-bsd hardened package.mask updates

i try to follow instructions from /usr/portage/sys-apps/portage/files/README.RESCUE
but this does not work
Any suggestions? :(

My /etc/make.profile link points to ../usr/portage/profiles/default-linux/x86/2005.0 so if it exists, try setting it to that. Looks like your current symlink points to nothing right now.

OK. I've created the recommended link
ls -l make.profile
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 48 Sep 15 16:38 make.profile -> ../usr/portage/profiles/default-linux/x86/2005.0

and this dir was not empty
bash-2.05b# ls /usr/portage/profiles/default-linux/x86/2005.0
2.4 make.defaults packages parent
and the make.defaults file is like this

bash-2.05b# more /usr/portage/profiles/default-linux/x86/2005.0/make.defaults
# Copyright 1999-2005 Gentoo Foundation
# Distributed under the terms of the GNU General Public License v2

and tried to run
emerge sync
!!! 'str' object has no attribute 'insert'
!!! 'rm -Rf /usr/portage/profiles; emerge sync' may fix this. If it does
!!! not then please report this to bugs.gentoo.org and, if possible, a dev
!!! on #gentoo (irc.freenode.org)

Then I did as suggested
bash-2.05b# rm -Rf /usr/portage/profiles
bash-2.05b# emerge sync
--- 'profiles/arch.list' is empty or not available. Empty portage tree?
>>> starting rsync with rsync://134.68.220.97/gentoo-portage...
>>> checking server timestamp ...
Welcome to hawk.gentoo.org
...........................

>>>
>>> Timestamps on the server and in the local repository are the same.
>>> Cancelling all further sync action. You are already up to date.
>>>

bash-2.05b# emerge portage
--- 'profiles/arch.list' is empty or not available. Empty portage tree?
!!! ARCH is not set... Are you missing the /etc/make.profile symlink?
!!! Is the symlink correct? Is your portage tree complete?

So it looks like I am in a deeper hole than before :?

Try going to http://gentoo.osuosl.org/snapshots/ and getting a portage snapshot, see if you can figure out something with that. I'm no portage expert, so I don't want to recommend rm -rf /usr/portage without making sure the snapshot has everything (havent installed gentoo for a while). Also, do try asking on the IRC channel #gentoo on irc.freenode.net because there are definitely people there who can solve your problem.

Moved from Portage & Programming to Duplicate Threads in favour of 'str' object has no attribute 'insert'.
