I just realized that in /var/tmp/portage I have a lot of (apparently) useless and disk space wasting files (including large directories left over from failed emerge processes)

is it a Good or a Bad idea doing a nice

cd /var/tmp/portage
rm -rf *

????

I remove it all the time. Those are temporary files from portage software compiles. It's good to empty them whenever you get a lot of files there, or as often as you'd like.

There's also /usr/portage/distfiles but try to remove only old versions. If you remove them all then when you have to recompile you will have to redownload those files from the mirrors again therefore wasting more bandwidth and time. This is especially important with things like enemy-territory which takes up 250 something megs.

Code:
alias cleanupvar='cd /var/tmp && df && rm -rf portage  && mkdir portage && df '

I use this alias to do the task.

Why don't you just:
Code:
alias cleanupvar='df && rm -rf /var/tmp/portage/* && df '
