Im a bit low on caffeine and frustrated right now, so I feel like ranting:

- trying to emerge beep-media-player (update), compiling process borks off since it can't find libstdc++ or something.
tried running gcc-config and all that jazz, only to solve it by making a symlink under /lib/gcc/etc that satisfies the crazy compiling process and points to the only gcc version I have.

I get often, am I doing something wrong? I usually just emerge -u world from time to time...

Perhaps you should consider using...
Code:
emerge -uD(av) world

.. for updating world.

man emerge wrote:
--deep (-D)
When used in conjunction with --update, this flag forces emerge
to consider the entire dependency tree of packages, instead of
checking only the immediate dependencies of the packages. As an
example, this catches updates in libraries that are not directly
listed in the dependencies of a package.

emerge -u is actually stabler by most accounts

wrt to this error it should not matter whether he used -D
