I wondered about, how you burn your dvds with gentoo on ppc.
I've got a ibook g4, with a external dvd burner (firewire), but I have
no clue what software to use to burn dvds.

What software can you recommend?

Thanks for your help

The better: k3b. Make sure you emerge it with the "dvdr" use flag set on. That will also push the package called dvd+rw-tools into your system.

Code:

[ ~/opt ]-[0]: emerge -pv k3b

These are the packages that I would merge, in order:

Calculating dependencies ...done!
[ebuild   R   ] app-cdr/k3b-0.11.24  -arts -debug +dvdr +encode +flac +kde +kdeenablefinal +mad +oggvorbis -xinerama 0 kB

I tried to emerge k3b, but i ran into problems when installing the required kde libs.

I will retry compiling the libs, but i asume they will not work (They stop compiling when some kde binary is started, and segfaults).

If it'll fail again, i'll post the last few lines..

I will be glad to help you if I can with my limited knowledge. Some kde compilation errors can be weird to solve. But k3b really worth the trouble to install qt and kdelibs. For now, is the better burning application ever written for linux/unix/bsd and the like.

Some of my friends are using k3b, and they all like it, so I also thought that I should give it a try.

Currently I'm syncing the tree, and afterwards I'll retry the merge, but that 'll take some time ;)

I'll vouch for k3b as well. Definitely one of the best burning programs in Linux.

As for your KDE build problem, do you have kernel preemption turned on? Are you running a ppc or ~ppc system? What's the exact error you're getting?

graveman is also an excellent choice, although k3b is... k3b. 8)

What you use depends on your personal style and the jobs you need to do. I find that growisofs is easiest for me. For data dvds and backups, anything more than growisofs just gets in my way.

If you have to make copies of stuff for the wife and/or kids, things are much more complicated. There's dvdrip, streamdvd + dvdauthor + growisofs... I haven't had much luck with any of it yet.

So, do you have kernel preemption on? Most GCC segfaults are due to kernel preemption, bad hardware or a problem with the toolchain. Can you provide the output of emerge info?
