Very strange,

Just check that there is no reference to "i386-pc-linux-gnu-gcc" in your /etc/make.conf" or in your environment variables.

There is a bug with python (very long discussion going on to resolve this bug)

in short reemerge python first

emerge python

then continue from there

CFLAGS="-march=pentium4 -O2 -pipe -fomit-frame-pointer
CHOST="i686-pc-linux-gnu"
CXX="${CFlags}"
GENTOO_MIRROR
SYNC
USE="-gtk -gnome qt kde dvd alsa cdr -oss -python"

I was just too lazy to write the sync and mirror. This is my make.conf file. I don't understand what's going on. I make no reference to i386

As I said in my post re-emerge PYTHON

long answer
PYTHON statically references what GCC it was compiled with IF you then change your CHOST then you will have problems when compiling anything that compiles against PYTHON

if that fails do this

change the line in /usr/lib/python2.3/config/Makefile along the lines of

CC=i386-pc-linux-gnu-gcc -pthread

to

CC=i386-pc-linux-gnu-gcc -pthread

try re-emerging PYTHON then emerge system
