I have a 300mhz b&w g3, which boots the tiger dvd and some os9 cd-s.
The problem is that it will not boot the Gentoo livecd, or any other linux based cd.
I have the latest open firmware update (1.1), by the way.

Is this a common issue with these b&w g3s? Are there any workarounds?

edit: It is a rev.1. Holding C during boot makes the drive spin up a bit, but it seems to not find any bootable media anyway.

Try booting it from the OF prompt:

Boot into OF by holding down Apple + Option + O + F
At the prompt type
Code:
boot cd:,\\yaboot

Are you sure that you burned the CD correctly?

Can you read the CDRom from inside OS-X?

Old CDRoms don't read writable CDs very well. It took me almost a week to get Gentoo on my G3 Powermac because the damned thing kept throwing read errors, after which it would simply refuse to even attempt to read from the CD any more - I'd have to cut the power ( wouldn't even unmount the partition ), boot from the CDRom ( difficult, as you've found ), and continue where I left off. It was infuriating.

But anyway, rest assured that the current CD does in fact boot on the B&W G3s.

I found the G3 in a dumpster, but since the case was so broken, I just took the important parts. This means that I have used a modern slimline DVD/CD-RW when I tried the last time (I tried other drives before that). The machine won't boot my Ubuntu PPC CD either (which is a pressed original, not burnt).

JoseJX: When I get the chance to connect the motherboard and stuff again, I will give your OF-command a go. I am absolutely positive that it is burnt correctly, it worked perfectly with my iBook G4 and my Quicksilver G4.

Thanks for the help so far, will try what JoseJX said asap.

No go. It just outputs:

can't OPEN: cd:,\\yaboot

:(

I noticed that "dev / ls" did not report anything about a cdrom present. It can still boot OS9-X though.

try using devices:

ide1/cdrom@1:
ultra1:
ultra2:

"dev / ls" and "devalias" should list those as well as cd: and hd:
