When I try to emerge something, I get the following message:

!!! 'str' object has no attribute 'insert'
!!! 'rm -Rf /usr/portage/profiles; emerge sync' may fix this. If it does
!!! not then please report this to bugs.gentoo.org and, if possible, a dev
!!! on #gentoo (irc.freenode.org)

When I do

rm /etc/make.profile
ln -s /usr/portage/profiles/default-linux/x86/2005.0 /etc/make.profile

I get the message:

!!! ARCH is not set... Are you missing the /etc/make.profile symlink?
!!! Is the symlink correct? Is your portage tree complete?

Does anybody know how to solve this weird problem?

Thx!

(oh, my kernel version is still 2.4 (shoot me))

Urgh, there are still people using ancient portage versions ?!?
Anyway, do the following:
Code:
ln -nsf /usr/portage/profiles/obsolete/x86 /etc/make.profile
emerge '>=sys-apps/portage-2.0.51'
ln -nsf /usr/portage/profiles/default-linux/x86/2005.1 /etc/make.profile

Try changing your profile to this.

Code:

rm /etc/make.profile
ln -s /usr/portage/profiles/default-linux/x86/2005.1/2.4 /etc/make.profile

As you see there is a 2.4 special subsection under 2005.1
After that, do a ls and make sure that you see something like this
Code:

[ /usr/share/icons ]-[0]: ls /etc/make.profile/2.4/
packages  parent  use.mask  virtuals

any other case maybe your portage tree is incomplete or corrupted. Sometimes, when manipulating "/etc/make.profile/" intead of "/etc/make.profile" (nothe the final /) we can delete the contents of our profile.

There are a surprising number...

Moved from Portage & Programming to Duplicate Threads in favour of 'str' object has no attribute 'insert'.
