Did I do something wrong here? On my Dell 700m 1.7ghz; I started the install over 8hrs ago. Should it be taking this long?

I haven't done it for a while...but that sounds about right...I think I remember once going to bed and it was still at it when I got up. I wouldn't worry if it is still compiling

This better be worth it. I am almost tempted to try some binary install.

If you picked the entire KDE, it will take awhile, hence the advantage of the split ebuilds.

Just let it keep going, it will get there. :)

What were you expecting?
You probably won't notice any difference from a binary distro.
Gentoo is a great distro, but on an initial install, you won't see anything different.

I wasn't thinking. Anything I should be building in the mean time?

Whatever you want...as long as it doesn't conflict with what you are currently installing. I do tandem compiles once in a while. However system resources are finite...so it will only serve to slow down your kde build. If I were you I would catch up on news or spend some time reading a book. The intial compile of a big desktop environment like KDE can take a while. It's worth it :) You will come to love your gentoo system. Welcome aboard!

Don't worry, openoffice will take ~20 hours on a 1st generation P4. Just for one package. :P
