Hi!

I frehsly installed gentoo 2005.1. Well inearlier installations I was always able to browse the / partition with my normal user, although not being able to modify anything of it (obvious, only root should do that). But now I can't even browse it so bash-completion for when I type /mnt doesn't work... I mean, I have to type the complete paths to /mnt/whatiwant or /home/myuser etc... How could I browse / again?

thx!

FuckingFreaky,

Have you mangled the permissions ?

Thx NeddySeagoon. Sorry for not saying that. I've checked my / permissions and all seems to be like yours:

drwxr-xr-x   2 root root  4096 sep 22 17:04 boot
drwxr-xr-x  23 root root 30720 sep 25 11:49 dev
drwxr-xr-x  58 root root  4096 sep 25  2005 etc
drwxr-xr-x   4 root root  1024 sep 24 18:14 home
drwxr-xr-x   8 root root  4096 sep 23 01:39 lib
drwx------   2 root root 16384 sep 22 17:02 lost+found
drwxr-xr-x  10 root root  4096 sep 24 16:55 mnt
drwxr-xr-x   2 root root  4096 jul 26 19:11 opt
dr-xr-xr-x  77 root root     0 sep 25  2005 proc
drwx------  11 root root  4096 sep 25 11:47 root
drwxr-xr-x   2 root root  4096 sep 24 06:59 sbin
drwxr-xr-x  10 root root     0 sep 25  2005 sys
drwxrwxrwt  10 root root  4096 sep 25 13:21 tmp
drwxr-xr-x  14 root root  4096 sep 23 23:00 usr
drwxr-xr-x  12 root root  4096 sep 22 21:57 var
Maybe I have to add my user to a group I haven't noticed?

Thanks for the support.

There's a bug in some 2005.1 stage 3 tarballs that eats / directory's file permissions for dinner.

Try running
Code:
chmod 0755 /
if you did a stage 3 install.

Hehe! Thx, that worked!

I should have imagined the permissions issue, but didn't know about the bug, and all seemed to be ok.

Thx to both. Bye!
