I've just emerged and attempted to configure (using yes for all the options) the vmware-workstation package.

Unfortunately, it doesn't work. Does anyone know of a gentoo installation resource or instructions I can get to to help get vmware running on Gentoo?

Thanks.

Please explain what you mean by "doesn't work".

I'm not sure what the previous poster means, but in my case I had a working VMWare config, just updated to:
Code:
witr@spooky ~/VMWare/Gentoo_2.4 $ vmware -v
VMware Workstation 4.5.2 build-8848
and it doesn work. By doesn't work I mean:
    * I start VMWare as usual, say by typing "vmware" in a terminal window.
    * Open an existing virtual machine (one that worked yesterday).
    * Push the "start this virtual machine" button.
    * Nothing happens!
And I mean NOTHING happens! No logfile is created, no messages in system long, machine doesn't start...nothing. Even if I enable "debugging information" in the advanced config screen.

VMWare seems happy (no message are output and the UI is responsive) but the virtual machines just do not start. 8O

Update: it appears that VMWare's frontend and backend are in different universes. If I "/etc/init.d/vmware stop" and start the vmware frontend as above, the frontend is blissfully unconcerned! Previously it would post a dialog to complain that the backend wasn't running. I get no error messages from any part of VMWare.

Code:
vmware is installed, but it has not been (correctly) configured for this system.  To (re-)configure it, invoke the following command: /opt/vmware/bin/vmware-config.pl.

I've ran this config script 12 times now with a reboot each time. Every time I get this message when I attempt to start vmware.
