Getting an error bootstrapping with the kernel headers in 2005.1:
Code:
*
* Library routines
*
CRC-CCITT functions (CRC_CCITT) [N/m/y/?] n
CRC32 functions (CRC32) [Y/?] y
CRC32c (Castagnoli, et al) Cyclic Redundancy-Check (LIBCRC32C) [N/m/y/?] n
  SPLIT   include/linux/autoconf.h -> include/config/*
  CC      scripts/mod/empty.o
cc1: error: code model `kernel' not supported in the 32 bit mode
make[2]: *** [scripts/mod/empty.o] Error 1
make[1]: *** [scripts/mod] Error 2
make: *** [scripts] Error 2

!!! ERROR: sys-kernel/linux-headers-2.6.11-r2 failed.
!!! Function compile_headers, Line 399, Exitcode 2
!!! prepare failed
!!! If you need support, post the topmost build error, NOT this status message.

I have one of those new-fangled AMD64 Semprons, however I'm not sure that my motherboard BIOS is new enough to recognize it as an AMD64 processor (only sees it as a Sempron) ... I'm not sure if that matters. I booted the AMD64 minimal liveCD, and ran what look like amd64 programs (linked against ld-linux-x86-64), so it seems to be running 64 bit stuff OK, but please correct me if I am wrong and/or if you know of any tests that I can run to see if it is actually running in 64 bit mode.

This may be completely irrelevant, but i havent installed a stage1 since my first system precisely because weird errors while bootstrapping. If you really want a stage 1 system, try the stage 1-on-3 guide which gets you the equivalent without the hassle of figuring out circular dependancies and such.

Also, on the subject of 32bit vs. 64bit. I'm pretty sure that the processor will run 64-bit and 32-bit code simultaneously, due to the new-fangled 32-bit compatibility modes. If you are booting from a livecd, links *should* be 64-bit. so if that runs, it should be running 64-bit, neh? Also, if you try booting a 64-bit cd in an x86 32-bit machine, it doesn't boot, leading me to beleive you certainly ARE in 64-bit.

This is where i step back and let the other guru's offer their suggestions.

HTH anyway.

... yes, what you're saying is irrelevant to the problem at hand.

(They may not be snake oil, but the purveyers of alternative installation methods are just as tireless and annoying as snake oil sellers.)

Please look at topic 354711 for suggestions.

sorry kimchi_sg, i was just voicing a pet peeve about the unfortunate troubles with a stage 1 install.
