Hiya Folks!

I'm trying to convert an old PPC into a MythTV (or other?) box, but i'm not quite sure if it's even feasible... I'd love some feedback before I get too deep into this.

Here's the specs for the ppc:
Model name: Power Macintosh 8600 series
Processor info: PowerPC 604ev
Machine speed: 300 MHz
FPU: Built-in
Built-in memory: 176 MB
Mac OS: 8.6
SCSI Drives: 4GB HD, CDROM, CD-R

Here's my specs:
Mac Knowledge: 0.01%
Linux Knowledge: power noob
Windows Knowledge: fading slowly and irrelevant now, thank god...

My goal:
Plug tv into ppc
Plug ppc into network
Have ppc play movies off the network and show them on the tv.

So, before I continue trying to figure out why all i get is a penguin...

Am I completely off my rocker? Or is it conceivable that I can make this happen...

Thanks for any imput (:

M.

If you're planning on using the built in video capture, it's not what you expect. It's better used as a webcam server than a TV viewer, the quality is lacking compared to newer devices and I don't think there's a wroking driver for it for 2.6. :p

If you still want to try it, it is the planb driver in v4l.

I don't really need to do any capturing...

Anything I might want to watch has already been downloaded/ripped/encoded/etc and is stored on my primary gentoo box. All the ppc really needs to do is connect to my primary box via samba, and play video out through the s-video out.

Thanks for your input...

What device are you using for TV Out? Also, I'm not sure how well that machine will play all formats of video, it depends on what you're playing.

<idiot mode>
Well, on the back of the machine is a panel with an s-video in and an s-video out, along w/ the red/white/yellow rca in and outs. (these are part of the case itself, not an expansion card) I was going to connect the s-video out on the mac to the s-video in on the tv and be merrily on my way...
</idiot mode>

But really, I have no idea what's inside.... which is why I'm educating myself first, before wasting any more time on this

So there could be codec issues I'm facing as well, even if I get everything running? It's not going to play any random free-range media file found roaming on teh net?

Maybe I should be spending my time learning how to properly author dvds...

Cheers (:
