Is anyone else getting sound corruption recently?
I get white noise from most apps, eg:

- xine
- eclair ( which uses xine libraries )
- xmms
- totem

BUT, other apps, particularly mplayer, play fine.

I'm using all these apps to play mp3 files, by the way.

I'm running a 2.6.13-gentoo-r2 kernel, compiled with gcc-3.4.4, and I'm using alsa. Oh yeah, and I've got a 1Ghz TiBook. All the above apps *used* to work...

I've finally gotten around to testing this out.

I've got the following ~/.asoundrc:

Code:
# ~/.asoundrc

# our ICE1712 dmix:
pcm.ossmix {
type dmix
ipc_key 1024
slave {
pcm "hw:0,0"
period_time 100
period_size 1024
buffer_size 4096 # buffer size < 6653, but pow(x, 2)
rate 44100 # we want to play CDs only
}

bindings {
0 0
1 1
}
}

# Everything shall be dmixed, so redefine "default":
pcm.!default {
type plug
slave.pcm "ossmix"
}

# OSS via aoss should d(mix)stroyed:
pcm.dsp0 {
type plug
slave.pcm "ossmix"
}

ctl.mixer0 {
type hw
card 0
}

I've logged out and back in ( just in case ). I've also tried changing the period_time setting.

I can't get anything other than white noise from all my favourite apps ( apart from mplayer, which seems able to put out good sound no matter what ).

Have I got the right stuff in .asoundrc? Is there anything else I should be doing?

Mangled alsa settings usually produce choppy sound for me.
White noise sounds could possibly be an endianness problem.

mplayer plays white noise with a few wav files I have, aplay plays them correctly though.

I'm currently doing an emerge -e xine-ui to see if that helps.

I don't suppose anyone knows which library xmms, xine, gstreamer, etc use that might have this endianness problem? Or do they all have the same issue in each package?

It's really very strange. xine can't play mp3s, but it can play DVDs!

I'm starting to think it's time to throw in the towel with my Powerbook and get myself an Athlon64 notebook.

I can verify similar behavior on my iBook G4 12". Xine plays stuff just fine but anything that uses artsd such as the KDE apps produces about 0.5 seconds of normal sound and then becomes very corrupt white noise. I have tried using ALSA directly from the kcontrol panel and ALSA+OSS emulation. Both produce the same results. Here is my machine info:-
