xorg-x11 gets installed since its a dependency of kde. And the message "ERROR: x11-base/xorg-x11-6.8.2-r4 failed." is not the error message, it's just the result (The emerge has failed). The error message we need to see is above that message. Therefore you should post the last 10 or 20 lines.

Thanks, I will post that as soon as I can, but for further notice, I tried to do a rebuild of stages 1-3 by doing a deep update and that also failed with the same error, further, I tried to install Links the text web browser, and it also turned out this error... yet, both SAMBA and vim emerged without a hitch. :?: :x when this works, I've had a problem before with a KDE update where it would boot KDE up all the way to the login screen, but my NVidia splash would stay up. I could interact with the desktop, but the video would be stuck on the NVidia splash. Last time I had this problem I used a command that said "ACCEPT"=x86... and this fixed it... where do I go with that? :oops:

I think you ment the following command:
Code:

$ ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~x86" emerge ...

Now using that, emerge tries to use as testing masked packages and therefore you shouldn't do that normally. If you want a unstable package you should add it to "/etc/portage/package.keywords". For example if you want to have the nvidia-kernel in version 1.0.7676, you add the following entry to that file:
Code:

=media-video/nvidia-kernel-1.0.7676 ~x86

That makes sure you unmask only that one specific version. If using the old syntax (See above) you unmask all masked packages and since the variable isn't set to "~x86" when doing your next update, the package gets downgraded again. Therefore ...
1. You should use the "package.keywords" file and not the old syntax
2. You should only unmask packages that you need

For example I've unmasked the latest nvidia drivers too and haven't had any problems yet. But you shouldn't try to update your whole system to use unstable packages since that could break it.

Well, I'm a little bit confused about the "Illegal instruction" error. Perhaps you could post
- output of "emerge --info"
- Your computers specifications (What CPU (AMD Athlon-xp, Pentium II), ... or what ever)

And are there more errors before ?

those are the last errors that I see on the screen, but I'll see about the info here in a few. As for the Processor. I run AMD only.

Code:

CBUILD="i686-pc-linux-gnu"
CFLAGS="-march=athlon-xp -pipe O2"
CHOST="i686-pc-linux-gnu"
CONFIG_PROJECT="/etc /usr/kde/2/shar/config /usr/kde/3/share/config /usr/share/config /var/qmail/control"
CONFIG_PROJECT_MASK="/etc/gconf /etc/terminfo /etc/env.d
CXXFLAGS="-march=athlon-xp -pipe -O2"
DISTDIR="/usr/portage/distfiles"

There is more, I will post the rest later, and again, thank you for watching out to help me

Your CFLAGS are set to "-march=athlon-xp -pipe O2" but the last one has to be "-O2". I think that's typo, isn't it ?
Anyway, you can emerge save the whole output by specifieng a log directory. Put the following in your make.conf:

PORT_LOGDIR="/usr/local/portage_log"

and after that create that directory:
Code:

$ mkdir /usr/local/portage_log

The log files will be stored there. If you want you can send it to me (XXXXXX@XXXX.XXX) or post the relevant lines here.

Check your -march setting.
