Hi,

I am having this weird problem with the system clock. It drifts, but this is not that big a problem that's why we have adjtimex and ntpd. Problem is the drift varies widely. I am running ntpd and /var/lib/ntp/ntp.drift is one day at about 150, and then ntpd starts to adjust the clock often, and the next thing I see is that now the drift is up towards the maximum value of 500. Then it goes back, then up again, and I cannot see any systematic behaviour in all fo this. In particular as far as I see the drift varies uncorrelated to CPU load or disk access.

Since I am running ntpd this is not that big a problem but the machine being a laptop it would be nice to be able to adjust the clock one and for all. Any ideas? The machine is a Tibook rev IV (PowerBook3,5). The hardware clock keeps time quite nicely so I do not think it is the culprit.

What kernel(s) are you running? This is a problem with some recent kernels.

This happened throughout the 2.6.12-gentoo series (currently using 2.6.12-gentoo-r10). I am not able to say anything about earlier kernels, I upgraded the logic board recently so my Tibook in its current incarnation did not run anything else. For what it is worth, the older kernels did not have any problems on the old logic board (rev III, 667MHz).

There are reports of clock problems with 2.6.12 kernels. I have problems with my clock when I try to boot a 2.6.12 kernel. I don't actually get linux up and running, but I do get the screwed up clock. I guess you could either use a different kernel or live with it.
