I've got over 2.6GB in my /var/tmp/portage directory and it's filled with folders that are named after versions of programs I'm no longer using. I'm hardly an expert, but I'm under the impression that when Portage builds programs, it uses the directory to put them together, then copies them over to where they need to be installed. The only real problem is that it doesn't seem to clean up any of the files it's created in the process.

I asked a friend about it and he said not to - that programs use it as they're running and it would be a bad idea. I'm not sure he's right, but I thought I'd run it past the experts (you guys) first. :)

Also, any other tips for freeing up disk space would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance. :)

I often remove stuff out of that dir.
I am also no expert, but from what i can tell, it is just where portage compiles the program that you are e-merging.

Also the general rule of thumb if you are a programmer/developer of some sort, is never put something in a "temp" dir unless it can be removed without warning.

So consider your dir name /var/TMP/portage, i would say that anything in the /var/tmp dir can be removed. (and as i said, i do this from time to time).

Hope that helps.

To safely free up space:
Code:
rm -rf /var/tmp/portage/* && rm -rf /usr/portage/distfiles/*

Awesome guys, thanks. :) My remaining free space went from 27GB to 32.5GB. I am indebted for your help!

Any other ways I can free up more space? It's one of my favorite pasttimes. If there are FAQs about it, please point me in their direction, I didn't find any in the forums here, but I may have missed something.
