I've bee installing linux on my new ibook G4, however I haven't got sleep to work properly. Up till now I have solved all my problems with search but not this one. So here's the problem. When I'm connected to AC sleep seems to work, atleast display shuts down when I close the lid and comes back when I open it, however I can't find anything in logs to verify if it has gone to sleep or not. While on battery this dosen't work, if I close the lid it seems to go to sleep again and if I leave it closed for few minutes it seems to shuts itself down, atleast opening the lid dosen't do anything, pressing power button does normal start. Sleep led works when on AC, but not during that short period on battery before it shuts. I tryed pmud instead but that flooded it's logs with "sleep not supported" whenever I closed the lid. On interesting note, during tests on battery with pmud I actually got it to wake up once when closing lid again and pmud started to flood it's logs again.

I use suspend2. Take a look at the power management guide.

Been bit buys lately and haven't had much time with this problem, however it still isn't solved. Newest pbbuttonsd dosen't help. I'm pretty sure it's just something i'm missing somewhere, ppc as a platform is new to me. I'm going to take more indepth look into it next week when I got vacation, but in meen time I have new problems on my main that I got to solve.

Your config looks okay, the only thing I can really suggest I guess is to remove things you don't need from the kernel and build a newer version (2.6.13-r3 is stable now).

Generally isn't sleep supported out of the box on apple laptops with recent kernels ?

No, since 2.6.10, it's supported on all ATI based laptops. Only suspend to disk works on nvidia. I'm not sure what is going wrong for the original poster.

After some testing my ibook definately isn't going to sleep even when AC. However after actually using google instead of searching here, I came across this, and from there these little puppys

http://lkml.org/lkml/2005/10/1/30/index.html
http://lkml.org/lkml/2005/10/1/36/index.html

So it looks like newest ibooks arent supported yet, As these seem to be quite easy patches to kernel I guess we can expect them into future gentoo sources, or are they there already? Those patches are for the new 12" ibook, but most likely will apply to 14" as I'm getting similiar outputs from cpuinfo etc.

Which iBook do you have ?
Do you think that ubuntu uses those patches so that's why sleep worked on my iBook 1.33 Ghz out of the box ? (with the liveCD)

New 14" ibook I bought few weeks ago. Could be that most reasent ubuntu has those patches already, I'm going to take a look onto my *13-gentoo-r3 sources and see if I could manually apply them and then test, or if they are already in latest stable gentoo sources. However I could not get sleep to work with latest kernel either so I'm guessing that these are missing those.

Maybe you could post a bug and ask to include those patches in gentoo-sources (since they are already accepted upstream in 2.6.14).

Those patches weren't in current r3 gentoo sources and I added/modified needed lines by hand and now sleep seems to work, I'll do bug report now if there isn't one yet.

i was trying to install gentoo on my new ibook 14'' 1.42 Ghz too, and I have a problem it appears with the framebuffer I think.
I use 2005.1 livecd. there's no splash. If I don't use the keyboard for a few minutes, the screen goes white or blank and I can't go back to console.
how did you succeed in installing gentoo on your iBook ?

I guess you'r trying to install on battery? LiveCD seems to use pbbuttonsd for ability to go to sleep, however fbblank feature in it does not work correctly (I took it off on final install). It blanks display but can't bring backlight back to life. I was on AC whole time so had no major problems as long as I didn't close the lid.

I understand the needed patch for sleep mode in Jul2005 ibooks is in kernel 2.6.14.
I'm using that kernel.
When I do: 'echo mem > /sys/power/state' it starts to sleep but recovers immediately, and the screen starts showing colors - at which point I lose the console. typing commands appear to be working still though. I'm using radeonfb.
What am I doing wrong ?

Anyone got sleep to work on his new iBook ?
I have two issues: first suspend resumes immediately for some reason - I'm not yet sure. Second - there seems to be some problem with the frame buffer. I'm using radeonfb, and when the laptop resumes the screen shows full color screens cycling every few seconds, like red -> blue -> white -> black etc... very odd behaviour. Anyone has any suggestions in relation to this ?

Yes sleep works fine for me now. Needed patches are now in newest ~ppc gentoo sources (2.6.13-gentoo-r5). Not sure about your fb problem, only problem with fb I have is that sometimes during bootup fb isn't working properly.

Is it the iBook 12'' or 14'' ? do you use radeonfb on it ? what do you mean by fb is not working properly ? is it also cycling through colored full screens ?
I'm using 2.6.14 kernel which has that patch for the iBook...

It's 14" model. My fb problem dosen't happen always, most of the time it works quite fine, but sometimes I get garbled image on bootup. It dosen't really cycle colors but.. well.. hard to explain. And yes, I'm using radeonfb.

It's really strange then. If we both have same iBook G4 1.42Ghz 14'' it should react the same way. Could you show me your .config ? Also do you just use pbbuttonsd or "echo mem > /sys/power/state" ?

One more question - do you pass anything in kernel command line for radeonfb ?

Sorry about late responce, been bit busy.

No I don't pass any kernel commands on bootup. I only use pbbuttonsd for sleep mode.

Here's my current .config hope it helps you.

One interesting thing is that you have both framebuffer radeonfb and of (openfirmware) compiled in kernel. When both are in and you don't use a kernel cmdline to chose either, it's not clear which one you are using.

Maybe you could post your ouput from:
Code:
# fbset -i

(from package 'fbset')
or you could check dmesg to see if it's using radeonfb or of-fb

There's also been some talk of a USB bug causing problems with PPC sleep, if you have any USB devices, unplug them before sleep.
