I have a ppc64 install on my dp1.8 powermac. I recently updated my kernel to 2.6.12-gentoo-r10 and now have functioning sound with alsa. Are there options available for streaming audio? I used to use xine and realplayer on my iBook but I can't seem to get xine compiled and I don't know if realplayer is an option on ppc64.

Also I can't seem to compile KDE. It crashes during compiling of kde-multimedia with the following error message:

grep: /usr/lib/gcc/powerpc64-unknown-linux-gnu/3.4.1/libstdc++.la: No such file or directory
/bin/sed: can't read /usr/lib/gcc/powerpc64-unknown-linux-gnu/3.4.1/libstdc++.la: No such file or directory

!!! If you need support, post the topmost build error, NOT this status message.

If anyone has any suggestions or experiences to share I would really appreciate it. I am happy to finally have X, fluxbox, sound, and mpg321/ogg123 working but we all like to be greedy!

It seems you haven't emerged libstdc++ before you tried to emerge KDE.
Xine and Gxine can be compiled under ppc64, at least in my ppc64 system. What's wrong when you compiled xine? Realplayer cann't be compiled under ppc64 to my knowledge.
Do you use the mac G5 built-in sound system? if so could you tell me how to do it, kernel options, alsa config, for example?

Thanks for the link nixmut, the easy fix solved my problem with both kde(which has bypassed problem and is continuing to compile) and xine which is now functioning. I simply typed fix_libtoo_files.sh 3.4.1 and the block is gone.

xyz, I am using sound with built in soundcard. After upgrading to 2.6.12-gentoo-r10 the hardware is functioning. I used ALSA with everything built into the kernel (no modules) as suggested here:

. The alsa guide was a big help. One problem that I have is that mpg123 does not work and gives error message:

Can't open /dev/dsp!

and madplay:
audio: /dev/dsp: No such file or directory

and mp3blaster:
Failed to open sound device.

While mpg321, ogg123, xine work fine. Xmms will work with ogg files, but not with mp3's ( I think this is linked to failure of mpg123 to work?). I am guessing that I am missing a configuration file somewhere and that the default settings for some programs work fine while others are not able to.

The other problem is that I can't get konqueror to find Xine as a plugin, only xmms (which crashes when I try to listen to mpeg stream), so still can't listen to streaming audio.

I now have some understanding of my sound difficulties. The programs that weren't working use OSS, so I needed to enable OSS emulation (OSS_PCM). So to be more exact, in the kernel I have:

<*>Advanced Linux Sound Architechture
<*> OSS PCM (digital audio) API
ALSA PowerMac devices--->
<*>Powermac

Now when I boot I have /dev/dsp, which is a link to /dev/sound/dsp. However when I run mpg123, it gives me static. Does anyone know if I can fix this or is it just not functioning yet?
Thanks

-Todd
