how install jre on powerbook G4 superdrive.
no download ?

Code:

localhost ~ # emerge jre
--- Invalid atom in /etc/portage/package.use: dev-java/ibm-jre-bin-1.4.2
Calculating dependencies ...done!
>>> emerge (1 of 1) dev-java/ibm-jre-bin-1.4.2 to /
!!! IBMJava2-JRE-142.ppc.tgz not found in /usr/portage/distfiles

!!! dev-java/ibm-jre-bin-1.4.2 has fetch restriction turned on.
!!! This probably means that this ebuild's files must be downloaded
!!! manually.  See the comments in the ebuild for more information.

 * Due to license restrictions, we cannot redistribute or fetch the distfiles
 * Please visit: http://www-106.ibm.com/developerworks/java/jdk/
 * Download: IBMJava2-JRE-142.ppc.tgz
 * Place the file in: /usr/portage/distfiles
 * Rerun emerge

I register on http://www-106.ibm.com/developerworks/java/jdk/ but not download !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Do you mean, you not able to download the file, or you don't want to?

I remember emerging ibm-jdk without these tgz. Has this changed?

if java isn't so very important to you, I mean, i.e. you're a java coder and needing the newest classes and stuff, you could try the blackdown-jre
it works for my in opera and firefox

I just passed this the other day. You have to go to the pSeries jdk and jre downloads in order to get the proper files. Then you place the files in: /usr/portage/distfiles as emerge has told you. The trick is that the ebuild was not made for the release that ibm has on their site (even though both are supposed to be 1.4.2). So, you can edit the digests for your ebuilds with the new md5sums and sizes, AND the Manifests (they contain the MD5 of the digests you have just changed). After that, try emerging again and all should be well if you did it all correctly.

Oh, that's a really ugly behaviour. I will check bugs.gentoo.org for that.

the problem i had was that the name of the file on IBM' site isnt the same as the one gentoo is expecting in the distfiles folder. Now it is working perfectly with 'eclipse'.

btw, java5 seems to work fine too but does anyone know when it shall be added to portage?

IBM's Java5 is already in portage, you'll need to unmask it though because it's still incompatible with some important packages (OO.o for instance).

It won't be marked stable until major apps that require java support it.
