Hello.
I type in the following
Code:
emerge -a world

It tells me this...
Code:

Calculating world dependencies
!!! Problems have been detected with your world file
!!! Please run emaint --check world

 ...done!

and it just has no packages, so I do this...
Code:

# emaint --check world
----
Checking world for problems

'sys-fs/captive' has no ebuilds available
'sys-apps/sportage' has no ebuilds available
'app-portage/porthole' has no ebuilds available

it's captive ntfs, c++ portage, and porthole.

I'm fine without it updating these, the only one I use is captive ntfs - how can I fix this so I can update the world?

It sounds like your portage tree has been corrupted. Porthole has not been updated yet, I still have 2 bugs to track before I release -0.5.0. I would look at the tree manually to see if they are there or not. Possibly hard drive/file system problems? Perhaps an emerge sync will fix it.

I unmerged the 3 troublesome packages.

and I compiled captive-ntfs manually, it works now :)

You didn't need to unmerge them.

What you needed to do is this:
1) Get a new portage snapshot and unpack it to /usr/portage
2) Check if all those ebuilds really do exist (it's easy to have installed something that was later removed from portage).
3) Only if the packages really aren't in the tree should you delete them.
