My G5 could not emerge anything after an unfortunate update. I eventually reinstalled a stage 2 system and after several days of battle I reached the final step: unmounting every partitions and rebooting. I forgot to unmount the partitions before rebooting and the system could not be rebooted. I therefore used the cdrom to boot and I found out that most of my disk partitions were broken beyond repair. The three commands "mac-fdisk", "mount" and "fsck.ext3" give this:
Code:
# mac-fdisk -l /dev/sda
/dev/sda
        #                    type name                  length   base      ( size )  system
/dev/sda1     Apple_partition_map Apple                     63 @ 1         ( 31.5k)  Partition map

Any idea how to recover from such a disaster? Thanks in advance for any tips.

Usually that kind of error indicates a failing disk, or at least that's pretty much the only time I've ever had errors like that. You could try completely formating it again, sometimes that helps. Sorry. :(
