I'm installing Gentoo 2005.1 on my dual 2GHz G5. It's running awesomely (see my MAKEOPTS later :D), but when emerging some packages, the machine suddenly reboots. It always reboots at the same place in the compile, though that place changes from one package to another. (in the middle of configuring, immediately after compiling a specific source file, etc.) So far I've encountered these mysterious reboots emerging readline-5.0-r2 and gdb-6.3-r4. I'm using ppc64 and a 64-bit userland.
I don't get these reboots if I manually compile, but I have to both add the package to package.provided and emerge --inject it to prevent portage from trying to compile it later...
My make.conf:
Code:
CFLAGS="-O3 -pipe -fomit-frame-pointer -ffast-math -falign-loops-max-skip=15 -falign-jumps-max-skip=15 -falign-loops=16 -falign-jumps=16 -falign-functions=16 -malign-natural -ffast-math -funroll-loops -mcpu=G5 -mpowerpc-gpopt -mtune=G5 -fsched-interblock -fgcse-sm -mpowerpc64 -maltivec"
CHOST="powerpc64-unknown-linux-gnu"
CXXFLAGS="${CFLAGS}"
MAKEOPTS="-j4"
GENTOO_MIRRORS="http://mirror.datapipe.net/gentoo http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/distributions/gentoo/ http://cudlug.cudenver.edu/gentoo/"
USE="-gnome kde altivec unicode alsa cjk"

I trust these CFLAGS; everything about my system is totally stable (and I am pretty good at destabilizing things ;)) except these reboots.

The PPC64 team is working on it, but for now, turn off sandbox while emerging packages that do this. I think this was the answer, but I'm not positive since I don't use ppc64.

Thanks. I'll try that next time I hit a package that does this.
Incidentally, Gentoo rocks. The CPU load on my PPC64 machine is currently at nearly 1,300% and it's still 100% responsive. :D

Edit: I must recommend that non-expert (non-masochist) users not add -malign-natural to their cflags, as packages which ignore the make.conf cflags setting will break with a message you might not expect (or none at all); those packages must be forced to use -malign-natural, which requires some ugly hackery...
Edit edit: Er... I just found the custom-cflags USE flag :|
