I don't know if I have over looked this one or not, but either way I havn't been able to find the answer on my own...
What is the significance of the letter next to Ebuild when you "emerge -pv package", for instance:
Code:
# emerge -pv gdm

These are the packages that I would merge, in order:

Calculating dependencies ...done!
[ebuild N        ] gnome-base/gdm-2.8.0.3 -debug +ipv6 +pam (-selinux) -static +tcpd +xinerama 4,240kB

Total size of downloads: 4,240 kB

I've been having a little trouble finding information on this, for instance the colors, what do the colors represent? For example I've noticed that the dependencies that I have enabled as USE flags have a plus symbol and are red and the dep's I don't have enabled have a minus symbol and are blue. That question goes for the letter that sits next to the ebuild. What does their colors represent???

Any help of course would be much appreciated, THANX 8) .

N is for NEW (it has to do a 'virgin' install of it), a R is for Re-installing that package, and the rest I don't really know of...

Colors are used to help you read the output, with --nocolor, there's no information loss. Manual page of emerge is quite descriptive (at least for me)

The 'OUTPUT' section of:
Code:
man emerge
has a comprehensive description of all the letter codes that may appear.

Moved from Portage & Programming to Duplicate Threads, please see this FAQ: GF1: What are the letters in "[ebuild N]"?
