My workstation is running Gentoo 2004.2 installed via stage 3 live cd with kernel Linux-2.6.7-gentoo-r11. I issued emerge sync to update my portage tree. Afterwards when trying to emerge anything I received the message below.

!!! ARCH is not set... Are you missing the /etc/make.profile symlink?
!!! Is the symlink correct? Is your portage tree complete?

I removed the dead link for /etc/make.profiles and issued
ln -s ../usr/portage/profiles/default-linux/x86/2005.0 /etc/make.profile

Now when trying to emerge anything I receive
!!! 'str' object has no attribute 'insert'
!!! 'rm -Rf /usr/portage/profiles; emerge sync' may fix this. If it does not, then please report this to bugs.gentoo.org.

After removing the /etc/make.profile symlink and reissuing emerge sync I get the same error. How can I correct this so I can update my system?

how about:
Code:
cd /etc
rm -f make.profile
ln -s ../usr/portage/profiles/default-linux/x86/2005.1 make.profile
emerge --sync

cheers

I was able to resolve this by first removing the /etc/make.profile symlink. Then emerging a newer version of portage while specifying my ARCH with
ACCEPT_KEYWORDS=~x86 ARCH=x86 emerge -n '>=sys-apps/portage-2.0.51' After the emerge of portage I created a new /etc/make.profile symlink to my original profile of 2005.1 with ln -s /usr/portage/profiles/default-linux/x86/2005.1 /etc/make.profile

My question now is, will this profile situation occur every time I update my portage tree?

I don't think so. But if you have this issue every time you sync, then I would suggest you to post a report at bugs.gentoo.org
