Does anyone have a recommendation for an inexpensive keyboard (usb) & mouse (usb) that will work on an iMac 350 (slot loading, blueberry)? I am running Gentoo and XFCE4 for the basic system.

I believe that my keyboard (original Apple equipment) is defective. I have been experiencing an intermittent shutdown problem - it rarely shuts down properly. Most times it reboots on shutdown or sometimes it shuts down and then the power light on the monitor comes back on without the computer actually being on (can't get it to turn off all the way). However, if I pull the keyboard cable out of the monitor immediately after shutdown and plug it in immediately after hitting the power button to turn it back on, everything works as expected. Although, I have to admit that this problem became much worse shortly after I upgraded the kernel to 2.6.13-r3. I've tried changing the settings related to power management in the kernel, but it has not impacted the performance. As for the mouse, the action is very rough.

Any usb keyboard and mouse should work fine since those models should have the power button on the machine instead of only on the keyboard.

Try using visiting Macally website - http://www.macally.com/ - to see what they have..
I am currently using their most basic iMac looking keyboard called Ikey.. it is a great substitute for the original keyboard.
In store they have mice as well as keyboards and all sort of other mac- compatible peripherals etc.
recommend looking there. that is http://www.macally.com/ again
good luck!

Thanks for the input. As a new iMac and Gentoo user, I wasn't sure if there were any hardware compatibility issues. I ended up buying an inexpensive Rosewill keyboard and Logitech mouse. While they work great (and my old stuff really needed to be replaced), but they didn't solve my shutdown problem. An update, however, to 2.6.14-r2 seems to have solved the problem.
