I'm running very low on HD space. I've deleted big files in /usr/portage/distfiles and obviously cleared /tmp /var/tmp etc.

I've been a bit of an idiot emerging it seems, 'cos I dont know where space has gone.
I havn't installed that much, but there is a lot of stuff I havn't a clue about.
Any directories or caches or anything I could clear up?

Tell us a little bit more about your system. How much space did you reserve for Gentoo, how old is your installation, which big packages (gnome, kde, xy-sources) have you installed? Check for slotted packages. For example, kernel sources in /usr/src/linux are not cleaned automatically, leaving something like 250MB each.

You can use nice graphical tools like filelight to find big files.

Moved from Kernel & Hardware to Other Things Gentoo.

Well, I use fluxbox, but I have installed some gnome and some KDE libraries to use rox, gedit, gaim, stuff like that. My installation is about 3 weeks old, and I did a stage one install. Ok, 4.4 gigs isnt very much, and I'll put up with it if I have to, but any suggestions? What is a 'slotted' package? How do I check? Also, any other places like /usr/src/linux to check? Anything else do do with portage/emerge that might have files residing somewhere? Also, do you know where to find ccache's cache? Might delete that.

Code:
bounce linux # df -h
Filesystem            Size  Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/hda6             4.4G  3.9G  545M  88% /
udev                    252M  2.5M  249M   1% /dev
/dev/hda2              32G   14G    19G  43% /mnt/WinXP
none                    252M       0  252M   0% /dev/shm

That 545M is after deleting some stuff.
Here's what /usr/src/linux looks like:

Code:

bounce linux # du -chs *
20K      COPYING
88K      CREDITS
8.3M     Documentation
36K      Kernel1Cormac
60K      MAINTAINERS
44K      Makefile
112K    Module.symvers
16K      README
4.0K     REPORTING-BUGS
1017K   System.map
63M     arch
657K    crypto
123M    drivers
29M     fs
39M     include
277K    init
357K    ipc
2.9M    kernel
1.3M    lib
1.7M    mm
17M     net
4.0K    patches.txt
1.9M    scripts
777K    security
18M     sound
77K     usr
5.6M    vmlinux
310M    total

So, not much there to to delete.
Code:

Also: bounce / # du -chs *
6.3M    bin
0       boot
68M     crash
2.5M    dev
20M     etc
0       home
13M     lib[/quote]
14G     mnt   /// Other hard drive, NTFS, so, can't write to it.
549M    opt
513M    proc
656M    root
8.9M    sbin
0       sys
12K     tmp
2.7G    usr
413M    var
19G     total

Fairly normal looking. :/

Cheers,
Cormac.

I don't think you can reduce that much. There are tricks like putting /usr/portage in a compressed filesystem etc., but personally I don't think it's worth the hassle. Storage space is cheap :)

See the FAQ Forum entry regarding disk space.
