Hi!

I successfully installed Gentoo on a number of machines, mostly x84 but also on a Sun Ultrasparc ... Now I got me a Power Mac G3 (beige) which has been upgraded ("Pimp my Mac") with a DVD ROM, an 80GB IDE HD, a PCI ATI Radeon, a DLINK USB Controller and a UltraDMA100 IDE Controller.

When I try to boot from the PPC Install CD by pressing "C" when the machine is powered on, a grey screen with a friendly old style mac appears but then the machine resets and gets exactly to the same spot (while I'm pressing "C"). When I release the "C" key, it finally boots into OS X ...

Any ideas? Maybe the IDE DVD-ROM is not supported as a boot device?

Thanks in advance,
kind regards,
Heiko

This is an Old World Mac and requires you to use OS9 with the BootX utility to boot into Linux. The 2005.1 InstallCD currently does not work with this machine, it's better to use the 2005.0 InstallCD and my OW Kernel: http://dev.gentoo.org/~josejx/OW-Kernel.bz2 for the kernel. See the handbook for more information.

Thank you for your reply. Unfortunately I do not have OS9 installed and I got no OS9 CD, only OS X 10.2.8 ... Any chance starting into Linux from within OS X ?

Kind regards,
Heiko
