Just had problems updating my system because / is full. Could anyone tell me what I can (and regularly should) safely delete to keep my root partition tidy?

Thanks,
dvrs.

You can delete the files in /usr/portage/distfiles. It's just the tarballs from all of the packages you've emerged. Most likely you'll never need them again. Currently that's taking up 1.3GB on my hd.

There's also the tmp directories, /var/tmp and /tmp, but I find there isn't much in them for the most part.

Thanks,

My /usr/portage/distfiles directory contained over 1GB of data - have deleted that now together with the tmp dirs. Now I've got 2.9GB available on /. Hopefully that should be enough to perform the world update that I have so far been denied!

Thanks,
dvrs.

If You don't want to delete blindly anything in a directory, have a look at the find command:
Code:
# find /tmp -type f -atime +14 -exec rm -f "{}" \;
for example deletes every file in /tmp not being accessed in the last 14 days.

Be careful with that!

You might extend that to a cronjob:
Code:
30 5 * * * for D in /tmp /var/tmp /usr/portage/distfiles; do /bin/find "$D" -type f -atime +14 -exec /bin/rm -f "{}" \;; done
