Hi,

First of all, sorry if this sounds trivial, but I am quite a beginner to Linux...

I have just finished installing gentoo on an iBook G3 700MHz with no major problem, but each time I try to mount a cdrom, I get this error message:
Code:
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/cdroms/cdrom0, missing codepage or other error
In some cases useful info is found on syslog - try dmesg | tail or so

dmesg | tail gives me this:
Code:
hdb: command error: status=0x51 { DriveReady SeekComplete Error }
hdb: command error: error=0x54 { AbortedCommand LastFailedSense=0x05 }
ide: failed opcode was: unknown
end_request: I/O error, dev hdb, sector 64
isofs_fill_super: bread failed, dev=hdb, iso_blknum=16, block=16

My /etc/fstab:
Code:
/dev/hda3      /      ext3      noatime         0 1
/dev/hda4      none      swap      sw         0 0
/dev/cdroms/cdrom0   /mnt/cdrom   iso9660      noauto,ro,users      0 0

Relevant lines of my kernel .config:
Code:
#
# ATA/ATAPI/MFM/RLL support
#
CONFIG_IDE=y
CONFIG_BLK_DEV_IDE=y

# CONFIG_BLK_DEV_IDE_SATA is not set
CONFIG_BLK_DEV_IDEDISK=y
# CONFIG_IDEDISK_MULTI_MODE is not set
# CONFIG_BLK_DEV_IDECS is not set
CONFIG_BLK_DEV_IDECD=y

#
# SCSI device support
#
CONFIG_SCSI=y
CONFIG_SCSI_PROC_FS=y

#
# SCSI support type (disk, tape, CD-ROM)
#
CONFIG_BLK_DEV_SD=y
# CONFIG_CHR_DEV_ST is not set
# CONFIG_CHR_DEV_OSST is not set
CONFIG_BLK_DEV_SR=y
CONFIG_BLK_DEV_SR_VENDOR=y
CONFIG_CHR_DEV_SG=y
# CONFIG_CHR_DEV_SCH is not set

Does anybody have a clue ?

Thanks in advance

If it does that with all (or a lot of) cds the drive is probably dying.

Hi again,

First thanks for the answers. Concerning my problem, I've just noticed that only the audio cdroms cause the problem I described earlier. I also discovered in the ppc-faq the subject dealing with audio CDs, so that pretty much settles it.

Sorry for posting a problem that was not a problem :?
