ok so, i have little skill whenit comes to making up my mind -- so i end up compiling and installing all sorts of WM's, programs, etc.. that i get rid of later. i alot of times do a --depclean to get rid of useless crap now that a program is gone, but i have a hunch this is not the whole story.

Code:
 # du -h --max-depth=1
112M   ./bin
52K   ./doc
500K   ./games
16K   ./i386-pc-linux-gnu
2.6M   ./i686-pc-linux-gnu
41M   ./include
793M   ./lib
4.8M   ./libexec
72K   ./local
64K   ./man
490M   ./portage
2.9M   ./sbin
716M   ./share
574M   ./src
2.7G   .

793M of libs?! i know some of these are not doing anything, the only problem is i don't know which ones. i dont think i have that stout of an install ::
here is world file:
Code:

sci-biology/foldingathome
xfce-extra/xfce4-systemload
x11-themes/xmms-themes
media-video/xine-ui
www-client/mozilla
media-gfx/scrot
media-sound/alsa-utils
media-video/nvidia-settings
x11-misc/xscreensaver
dev-java/java-config
app-arch/gzip
app-text/xpdf
sys-kernel/linux-headers
net-irc/irssi
sys-boot/lilo
x11-misc/xaos
net-www/mplayerplug-in
xfce-extra/xfce4-artwork
net-ftp/proftpd
media-fonts/terminus-font
app-admin/syslog-ng
app-editors/vim
x11-misc/3ddesktop
sys-process/vixie-cron
xfce-extra/xfce4-taskbar
net-p2p/nicotine
sys-apps/pciutils
games-fps/cube
mail-client/sylpheed-claws
net-im/pork
media-gfx/gimp
x11-terms/rxvt-unicode
x11-base/xorg-x11
net-misc/dhcpcd
media-plugins/xmms-cdaudio
sys-kernel/gentoo-sources
app-text/gv
sys-libs/glibc
dev-util/guile
xfce-extra/xfce4-weather
www-client/mozilla-firefox
media-sound/rhythmbox
media-video/nvidia-kernel
app-cdr/cdrtools
app-editors/nano
app-cdr/cdrdao
xfce-base/xfce4
app-office/texmacs
sys-fs/jfsutils
net-p2p/bittorrent
app-editors/gvim
sys-devel/gettext
net-firewall/iptables
dev-java/blackdown-jre
media-video/nvidia-glx
x11-misc/xcompmgr
app-office/abiword
media-fonts/cheapskatefonts

am i being too paranoid about space -- or does the world file not justify such disk usage? (oh ya and also -- nano is listed in the world file -- but i got rid of that trash long ago -- what gives?)

oh and sorry if OTW is not a good place for this -- i though it was not cut out for any 'help with portage' i think its more of a general linux dependency (and my lack of knowledge on the subject) issue.

EDIT: yes i know that the world file is not every package installed on comp, im not retarded. i just figure it would be easier to show the packages that I have wanted to install, rather than every single on of them

and USE flags are prety standard -- every audio/video library flage save for flaac and no jack support (i think), and a -qt, -kde -gnome, along with a gtk and some toehr stuff.

Clean out any kernel sources, run a make clean on whatever you want to keep (gets rid of temporary files), and clean out /usr/portage/distfiles (mine is nearly 2 gigs... *cleans*).

i wouldnt do a make clean on anything portage installed though (well i dont even think there are 'clean' makefiles -- your talking about things installed out of portage)

and if, by dependencies, a newer kernel was installed -- i can just delete the old sources -- no unmerge process?

I was talking about the kernel sources. Portage just downloads and unpacks them. Run make clean on all of them, and then --unmerge the ones you don't want (make sure you keep the .config's though, just in case).

Anything still left can be safely rm -rf'd away. :)
